Life of Pride

I had almost decided that I was obsessed with blogging. I told myself I should take a week's fast from this enjoyable pursuit. I felt happy and virtuous all yesterday. Today, as I reloaded my blog for the seventh time to see if there were any more comments (of course, there weren't), I noticed the date on the last post was 12/27. That was only day before yesterday. I stared in shock, because I had been quite sure I hadn't written a post for at least five days already. Hm.
I decided that it was silly to take a week off from blogging, because it is harmless. The only reason, I told myself, I had made that goal in the first place was to see if I could do it. That is not a good reason.

I am aching to write a lit-major post about Gone With the Wind, because I finally finished the book. It left me quite frustrated over the foolish selfishness of Rhett and Scarlett. I want to analyze it from a worldviews perspective. But that would have to wait, because it would take me a few hours to do it properly.

I also want to describe some of the things I've been doing these past few days, which include beginning research on my senior history project. I have found out some interesting stuff already, ILL'ed four books from the local library system, requested about six, and written down a list of ten or so that the Headquarters branch of the St. Louis system has in right now. But all that will have to wait too, because that will take more time than I have as well.

About all that leaves me is to say that I have typed this in less than five minutes, since I am about to run errands. I am just waiting for the deposits to be ready so that I can drop them at the bank. In an hour or so, the family is leaving to see Narnia at last. I will be watching it for the third time, and I am looking forward to it. Narnia is well on the way to being one of my favorite movies.

OK, time to go...

It continually strikes me how often people blog about some variation of obsession, addiction, etc. to blogging. Even more striking is the posts about what they will be blogging next, especially when, a day later, the 'feature story' never appears - in its place another semi-bland public-journal type of post.

Personally, blogging is much more a creative outlet than a tool for keeping in touch with friends - as the latter its no better than the bland Christmas letter you get from Uncle Gitanyo. That is what letters are for. Blogs are too public to print personal thoughts.

So keep it as an enjoyable pursuit. Spend the time you want writing the post about Gone with the Wind or your senior history project - spend that time instead of checking the blog comments every hour - they aren't going anywhere.

Just my $0.02. ;)

Hehe, thanks Mathew. No worries; most of the first part of the post was tongue in cheek, for humor's sake. :) The equivalent of speaking with a straight face. There was an element of truth, though, which is where the humor comes in. I was laughing at myself for refreshing my blog so often. And I had briefly considered seeing if I could give up blogs for a week, before I asked myself why exactly I would want to do that. I didn't think it was a tremendously huge deal, however.

So ya, I don't know if I'll get around to writing those two posts. I have lots more potential topics too. Usually, when I start to type an actual post, I end up with something completely different. So we'll see. :)

...and I was more observing the irony of the many people who blog about being "addicted" to blogging, than I was expressing worry about you. (Known to not blog for months at a time during the semester, and far, far too self-analytical to suffer such a malady anyway.)

If I'd had any serious concerns, I'd better be getting a good mirror, seeing as how I was just looking every fifteen minutes not only at my own blog, but my friend's, and their comments as well. My turn to laugh at myself.

A worldviews / lit-crit analysis of Gone With the Wind would be rather interesting if you find the time. :)

Why blog? Everyone's doing it. Normally that would be enough to keep me far, far away, but the concept is too cool. Spread your personal thoughts to the world - far better than talking, because you can say anything, and you don't need the courage to look someone in the eye. So, with these reasons in mind, I have embarked. Enjoy, or not, as the case may be. I know I will.
